Showtime Sports expert analyst Al Bernstein does not believe former champion Gervonta Davis is ready to fight Vasyl Lomachenko (10-1, 8 KOs), who holds the WBO super featherweight title.
Recently, Lomachenko has been taking shots at Davis through social media. The targeting of Davis was strange, because the young boxer has been out of the ring since August, does not hold a title, and Lomachenko made it clear that he wants to unify the division.
Davis and his promotional team, led by Floyd Mayweather, do not appear very interested in that bout.
Bernstein feels Davis is not experienced enough for that bout, and Lomachenko should instead target someone like WBC world champion Miguel Berchelt - who is very active and face a higher level of competition when compared to Davis.
"I think there’s some fights at 130lbs. I’d like to see him fight Berchelt who has one of the championships. He moved up to 130lbs recently, so I don’t see a reason why he can’t have a fight at 130 against somebody like Berchelt maybe. I don’t think Gervonta Davis will fight him, he’s not quite ready for Lomachenko in my opinion anyway, and there’s promotional difficulties there," Bernstein told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
Other options Bernstein would like to see, is Lomachenko moving up in weight to the lightweight ranks to take on world champions Jorge Linares and Mikey Garcia - who are regarded as the top dogs in that weight division.
"Berchelt is potentially doable under the right circumstances, in terms of business, and I think that would be a really interesting fight. At lightweight, there are fighters that are available that are interesting, Jorge Linares, Mikey Garcia. Linares is a more makable fight, Garcia would take more machinations to make it happen. Mikey Garcia vs Lomachenko could be built into something quite special, if Garcia could be at 135lbs. If Lomachenko could beat Linares at 135lbs, can you imagine how big that would make the fight?," Bernstein said.
