Just when you thought we had heard the end of Conor McGregor inside a boxing ring, Oscar De La Hoya brings the notion back with a vengeance.
Despite frequently bad-mouthing McGregor’s first foray into boxing vs Floyd Mayweather, the former boxing champion seemingly has no problem getting a piece of the pie himself.
“You know I’m competitive,” De La Hoya said. “You know I still have it in me. I’ve been secretly training. Secretly training. I’m faster than ever and stronger than ever. I know I could take out Conor McGregor in two rounds. I’ll come back for that fight. Two rounds.”
The boxer-turned-promoter has not stepped inside the squared circle competitively since his December 6, 2008 loss to Manny Pacquiao. And though some might point out that De La Hoya had a poor record during the twilight of his professional career, “The Golden Boy” was still stepping into the squared circle against some of the best in the world.
However, to be honest, this is not De La Hoya’s decision to make. This is all about McGregor.
The reigning UFC lightweight champion will be the A-side in any fight he competes in and he will do so on his terms. Though the Irishman has said he plans to return to MMA and defend his gold, he has also said that he will not return to the UFC unless he is a co-promoter.
McGregor Sports and Entertainment was an official co-promoter of McGregor vs Mayweather and that would continue if McGregor were to continue his run in the sweet science. However, MMA has never had a fighter be a co-promoter and it seems to be at odds with an antiquated wage scale within the UFC.
The question remains: will McGregor and De La Hoya meet inside the boxing ring sooner rather than later?
Online sportsbook [custom-bovada-link] is suggesting that it is not likely to happen. Odds for this fight to be signed and happen before the end of the 2018 calendar year are firmly behind the “no” prop.
However, lines were also released for the fight – if it were to happen. Despite his nearly decade-long absence from the ring, De La Hoya has opened as a small -140 favorite while McGregor comes back at EVEN.

ust when the notion of Conor McGregor stepping back inside the squared circle seemed to die down, boxing legend Manny Pacquiao gave it brand new life. “Pac-Man” confirmed that his representatives have reached out to McGregor’s camp for preliminary talks about a bout.
“If we can negotiate it, I have no problem. It is OK with both of us,” Pacquiao said. This comes less than a month after Pacquiao took to Twitter and seemingly called out the current UFC lightweight champion to a fight.
With the potential MacPac fight picking up steam, online sportsbook BetOnline has released odds for the bout. Pacquiao opened as a hefty -550 favorite with McGregor coming back at +420.
Pacquiao said that his opponent would need to be finalized by April, as he will only fight when the Philippines senate – of which the boxer is a member of – is in recess.
We have not seen Pacquiao compete since he lost the WBO welterweight title in a controversial decision to Jeff Horn back in July 2017. That being said, the soon-to-be 39-year-old is still one of the best boxers of his generation and has only lost back-to-back fights once in his legendary career.
We have not seen McGregor step inside the ring or the cage (no, we are not counting his incident in Bellator) since his TKO loss to Floyd Mayweather in August 2017. That is not to say “The Notorious One” does not have options, as the UFC champion has fighters from both MMA and boxing calling him out on the regular.
It seems at this point McGregor is going to do what’s best for business and that could be boxing. Fighters co-promoting events are commonplace in the world of boxing and McGregor is keen on doing the same for his fights in MMA, which has never really happened before. The Irishman almost certainly guarantees himself a bigger slice of the pie if he boxes unless the UFC caters to his promoting desires.
