The pinnacle of boxing was on display when Saul "Canelo" Alvarez faced off against Gennady "GGG" Golovkin in September 16. However, an unsatisfying draw means we need to run it back. GGG is being pegged as the -170 favorite with Canelo coming back at +140 for the rematch.
The first fight between GGG and Canelo was a master class of boxing. GGG’s suffocating pressure and constant jab were met with Canelo’s footwork and counters, supplying fans with a thrill ride of a fight.
However, neither man was able to separate himself enough from his opponent and the fight ultimately ended up a draw. Though a draw seemed perfectly acceptable – in my mind – it was the scorecard of Adalaide Byrd that caused a maelstrom of fury from boxing fans after the bout.
But, we move forward and the show must go on. There was little doubt that GGG and Canelo would face off again given the somewhat unsavory result. Both competitors agreed to a rematch when asked immediately after their first encounter.
It stands to reason that GGG opens as the fave, with many boxing fans and pundits saying he won the first fight. Through the middle portion of the fight, GGG continually trapped Canelo against the ropes and gave his counterpart little room to breathe. GGG seemed to push the pace for the bulk of the fight and even though Canelo came out strong and closed strong, it seemed to many that the Kazakhstani won the bout.
As much as it is easy to talk about the controversial decision, boxing fans should be looking forward to the rematch between GGG and Canelo. Both men displayed amazing boxing IQ, heart and desire when they first met – and we should expect even more of that the second time around.
