Golden Boy Promotions CEO Osar De La Hoya, who promotes Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, feels confident that his boxer will put down Gennady Golovkin in their upcoming rematch on May 5th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Canelo-GGG 2 will take place for the WBC, IBO, WBA, IBF middleweight titles at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena, which is where the first outing took place.
Canelo (49-1-2, 34 KOs) and Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) both still feel they won their first meeting last September. But one of the most entertaining fights of 2017 ended in a split draw, with one unexpected scorecard overshadowing the entire aftermath of the event.
Their first bout sold out T-Mobile Arena in two weeks and generated more than 1 million pay-per-view buys, reaching PPV territory only touched by Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya in the past 15 years.
The majority of observers generally agreed Golovkin won the first fight. Even HBO's in-house judge gave eight rounds to Golovkin, and Canelo heard some boos from the majority pro-Mexican crowd in Vegas.
One ringside judge scored it 115-113 for Golovkin, and another scored it a 114-114 draw. Veteran judge Adalaide Byrd created a lot of controversy when she scored it 118-110 for Canelo, giving only two rounds to Golovkin.
Canelo saw himself as a 115-113 winner in the bout.
De La Hoya also saw Canelo as the winner by a 7-5 margin in rounds.
The Golden CEO is very pleased that his company was able to finalize the rematch, even noting how he was never able to avenge his first career defeat - which came at the hands of Felix Trinidad.
"I would have really wished for a rematch against Felix Trinidad. I would have loved to have knocked him out in the last three rounds instead of boxing. We don't always get rematches of this magnitude, so that's why this fight is special. On May 5, we will get an explosive rematch, and I believe Canelo will knock him out," De La Hoya said.
