On Tuesday, WBO super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko sent a public message to Floyd Mayweather on social media - demanding a showdown with undefeated former champion Gervonta Davis, who Mayweather represents.
Lomachenko and his team believe that Mayweather is extremely reluctant to make a fight with Davis, who previously held the IBF title in the weight class.
Lomachenko’s Tweet stated: @FloydMayweather It would have been an honor to fight you in your prime but I’m not talking about you. Please stop hiding your fighter.
Davis (19-0, 18 KOs) has been out of the ring since knocking out Costa Rica’s Francisco Fonseca (21-1-1, 15 KOs) in the eighth round as part of the Mayweather-McGregor undercard at T-Mobile Arena in August.
The day before that fight, Davis was stripped of the IBF title for his failure to make weight.
Lomachenko (10-1, 8 KOs) was in action earlier this month, when he stopped Guillermo Rigondeaux in six one-sided rounds in New York City.
Mayweather has responded to Lomachenko - daring his promotional team to match him with Mikey Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs), who holds the WBC lightweight championship.
"If Lomachenko is what they say he is, I think they should make him and Mikey Garcia...I mean, that's just my honest opinion...great fighters always move up...we call that legendary...a lot of fighters are taking shots at Tank...at the end of the day...Tank is not perfect, but his boxing record is," said Mayweather to Fighthype.com.
There is no guarantee that Garcia will ever fight again in the lightweight division, which is where Lomachenko will likely fight in the near future.
Garcia, for the moment, will remain at 140 pounds for his next bout. He’ll try to become a four-division champion when he challenges IBF junior welterweight champ Sergey Lipinets (13-0, 10 KOs) on February 10 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
His last fight, against Adrien Broner in July, also took place at 140-pounds.
He did indicate to BoxingScene.com that he still plans to come down, at the very least for a unification with WBA champion Jorge Linares, who faces Mercito Gesta next month in Los Angeles.
However, he had a very bad falling out with Lomachenko's promoter, Top Rank, a few years ago. Garcia has doubts that Top Rank's CEO, Bob Arum, will allow him to fight Lomachenko.
