Former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr. (65-9, 47 KOs), who just turned 49 years old on Tuesday, is going to face Scott Signmon (30-11-1) on February 8th in the main event of Island Fights 46 at the Bay Center in Pensacola, Florida.
Jones claims the contest will be the final bout of his pro career. And tickets are selling fast, says the promoter.
"This is history. And people know it," said Dean Toole, the founder and CEO of Island Fights, to the Pensacola News Journal.
Jones last bout in Pensacola was on Aug. 13, 2016, in Island Fights 38 at the Bay Center when he won a ten round unanimous decision against Rodney Moore.
There is some debate over whether or not this bout will be the final contest for Jones in his hometown or the final bout of his career.
Either way, the tickets are flying for the event.
"It is already the best we have ever done for an Island Fights show," Toole said. "The other times Roy has fought here on Island Fights we had maybe three, or four weeks, to promote the fight. This one we've had seven weeks.
"People are already buying tickets in the upper deck and that has never happened this early. We were six weeks out and I was almost out of tables. Having the floor sold out will look awesome. From our Facebook site, to messages, my phone, and what I know is going on at the Bay Center, it has been really great sales. We are hoping to sell this out.
"(Moore) was a counter puncher," Toole. "A big counter puncher. This guy (Sigmon) is going to come forward and fight Roy. Those are the best fights Roy has been in. Roy wants you to cross the neutral zone and that is where people mess up. Anyone who has grown up watching Roy fight remembers those days. "You get to watch your favorite athlete growing up step into the ring one last time in front of his hometown crowd. That's special. I was shocked and nervous when he brought it up.. But"also it was mind-blowing. to know Roy Jones could fight on our our show for the final time."
