Abel Sanchez, the head trainer for IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs), is expecting his fighter to impress in the upcoming rematch with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs).
The rematch takes place on May 5th, at a location to be announced at a later date.
Their first contest took place last September at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with the bout ending in a controversial twelve round split decision.
The scores for the first bout were 114-114, 115-113 Golovkin and 118-110 Canelo.
Sanchez did not view the contest as being close. He felt his boxer won, in the worst case scenario, at least eight rounds of the fight.
If Golovkin does exactly what he did in the last fight, Sanchez expects his boxer to win the fight.
He says Canelo talked a lot before the first contest - promising to knock GGG out. And once again Canelo is promising to end the fight with a knockout.
"First of all I don’t think it was that close. I think a lot of people had it 8-4, but he still lost. Golovkin can do the same thing he did before and Canelo can do the same thing, and the fight will be the same as the first one. I think it’s on Canelo because of all the smack he’s talking," Sanchez told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
"Canelo did the same thing the first time, he said he was going to go out and knock Golovkin out in the tenth round, and so did Hopkins and De La Hoya, it didn’t happen and all they did was talk. They are doing the same thing again, so Canelo is putting the pressure on himself.
"All Golovkin has to do is what he did before and he wins the fight again. If Canelo stands in front of him, we’re going to see a different fight, we’re going to see a fight that the public is expecting, a classic fight."
