Two undefeated powerhouses will go toe to toe when Deontay Wilder puts his WBC heavyweight title on the line against Luis Ortiz on November 4. This fight holds massive weight in the boxing world, as the winner will likely face off against Anthony Joshua in 2018 with plenty of gold on the line.
Wilder opened as a -185 favorite with Ortiz coming back at +150 according to Bovada. This is unfamiliar territory for the challenger, as Ortiz has never closed as an underdog once in his career.
Wilder isn’t going to be confused with a great ring tactician, but “The Bronze Bomber” has cement for hands. The American wings bombs at his opponent with reckless abandon and violent intentions. Wilder’s technique could leave him open to a strong counterpuncher but nobody has been able to figure him out after 38 pro fights.
Ortiz doesn’t exactly scream “professional boxer” when you look at him but his ring IQ and absurd reach for his size make him a lethal opponent. The Cuban has tailored his style well to complement his strengths (counterpunching, mobility) and limit his weaknesses (cardio), which makes him a difficult opponent. If someone pushes the pace against Ortiz, though, it can expose his questionable cardio.
