One of the best pound for pound fighters of all-time, Roberto Duran, believes he has the game plan of what's necessary to defeat a dangerous fighter like WBA, IBO, IBF WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs).
On September 16th, Golovkin will defend his belts against Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
For Canelo, it will be his first contest at the full middleweight limit of 160-pounds.
Golovkin is regarded as one of the most dangerous and avoided fighters in the sport, and that reputation has made him an instant betting favorite over Canelo.
Duran says the key elements to beating a fighter like Golovkin is to give him angles, not allow him to set his feet to throw power punches and to use boxing abilities.
“It is a different time of course and today there are less great fighters but there is more money. Golovkin, you cannot square up with him. You must give him angles, as he will come right at you, trying to kill you! You must make him go crazy [with movement and by spinning him, not letting him get set] and then you must box him," Duran told Boxing News.
If Duran had a choice in today's landscape, he would like to fight former five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. Duran believes that he beat better fighters than Mayweather. And he believes Mayweather has copied a lot of his fighting moves.
"The one fighter from today I would most like to fight is Mayweather. All four of us, The Four Kings, we all beat better fighters than Mayweather. He has learnt a lot from me, his defensive moves. I would beat him up!," Duran said.
