Two of the judges who scored Canelo Alvarez a 115-113 winner over Gennadiy Golovkin in their rematch have been assigned to work their third fight.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission has approved Nevada’s Dave Moretti and New Jersey’s Steve Weisfeld to score their third grudge match September 17 in Las Vegas. The NSAC also assigned Oklahoma’s David Sutherland to the judging panel and Nevada’s Russell Mora Jr. as the referee for a super middleweight title fight that’ll headline a DAZN Pay-Per-View show at T-Mobile Arena.
While Moretti and Weisfeld regularly draw high-profile assignments in Las Vegas, Sutherland will work his first Alvarez fight.
Moretti has judged each of Alvarez’s last seven fights in Las Vegas, dating back to May 2017, and eight of his most recent 11 fights overall, regardless of location. Moretti and Weisfeld both scored Russia’s Dmitry Bivol a 115-113 winner over Alvarez in their 12-round light heavyweight championship match May 7 at T-Mobile Arena, but Moretti was the only judge that scored Golovkin the winner of his first fight versus Alvarez, 115-113.
Connecticut’s Don Trella scored their initial middleweight title fight a draw, 114-114, in September 2017 at T-Mobile Arena. Nevada’s Adalaide Byrd infamously scored that bout 118-110 for Alvarez, who won 10 of 12 rounds on her card.
In addition to Moretti and Weisfeld scoring Alvarez a 115-113 victor against Golovkin in their rematch, Connecticut’s Glenn Feldman scored their second encounter even, 114-114, in September 2018 at T-Mobile Arena.
Like Moretti, Weisfeld has been a familiar face at the ring apron when Alvarez boxes. Weisfeld has scored five of Alvarez’s past nine bouts overall and four of the Mexican superstar’s past five fights in Las Vegas.
Mora, meanwhile, has been the referee for each of Alvarez’s last three fights in Las Vegas.
He was not the referee, though, for either of the first two Alvarez-Golovkin bouts. Nevada residents Kenny Bayless and Tony Weeks were the referees for their first and second fights, respectively.
Guadalajara’s Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs) and Kazakhstan’s Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) will fight for Alvarez’s IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO 168-pound crowns next month. Their first two fights were contested at the middleweight maximum of 160 pounds. |
