New York - The fight is nearly 3 months away but the buzz for Canelo Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KO’s) vs. Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KO’s) was on full display inside of Madison Square Garden when the two camps met on the second stop of their press tour to promote their September 16th fight, taking place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The two met in front of media and fans who were on hand to see the two fighters take the stage after the premiere of the short film “I am Boxing” was played for those in attendance. Both men had their legion of fans with Canelo having the edge in support. One can argue that this is Canelo’s biggest fight as the A-Side and he wants to leave no doubt that he is the better fight even if he has a rematch clause.

“This is my biggest moment so obviously what I want to do is leave no doubt in this fight,” Canelo told BoxingScene.com through translator Eric Gomez. “I can have a rematch clause but I don’t want to leave doubt so that there is a rematch clause [needed], I don’t want controversy, I want to be the clear winner.”
In his last fight back in March, Golovkin fought a much bigger man when Daniel Jacobs refused to participate in the second-day weigh-in - as mandated by the IBF. The sanctioning body requires that both boxers step back on the scale, the following morning after the day of the official weigh-in, and each boxer has a maximum rehydration cap of 10 lbs from the 160 pound middleweight limit.
Golovkin holds the IBF, WBA, IBO and WBC 160 pound titles. Canelo has had a rocky relationship with the WBC - because he feels the sanctioning body tried to force him into a fight with Triple GGG with pre-determined purse splits in 2016. That caused Canelo to drop the very same title Golovkin now holds. Canelo was firm on his stance with both organizations.
“We absolutely intend on fighting for the IBF and weighing in on the second day. We haven’t decided on the WBC,” stated Eric Gomez of Golden Boy Promotions.
However, Canelo disagreed and quickly jumped in by stating - "No, I’m not fighting for the WBC." |
