Andre Ward: Won't Be Easy For Kovalev To Recover From Defeat

WBA/WBO/IBF light heavyweight champion Andre "SOG" Ward (32-0) has spent the past two weeks working the Terence Crawford-Julius Indongo broadcast and Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight week for ESPN.
When he was last seen in the ring in June, Ward stopped Sergey Kovalev in 8 rounds in a rematch of their razor thin November, 2016 bout.
After two high profile pay-per-view bouts Ward isn't sure what he will do next, having dropped hints that he may move up to the cruiserweight division or even to the heavyweight division.

"I don't know. I just think at this point it is tough when you go beat the guy in the division. It is tough. I got a great team, Josh Dubin, James Prince, Roc Nation. I have kind of gotten away and shut the boxing world out and they are going to present a couple options in the next week or so. So I am going to see what they got but we gotta go big or go home. That is my mentality," said Ward.
As for Kovalev, there has been talk that he will return on November 25th in a main event televised by HBO. Those reports were conflicted by a recent story on BoxingScene.com that stated that Kovalev may possibly retire.
When asked if Kovalev can come back and be an elite fighter, Ward was on the fence.
"I think it is 50-50. I think a guy can come back from that but I think it is going to be tough on Kovalev. I am not saying he can't but his whole reputation was built on being the monster, being the Krusher. Then when you get a guy who tells you he is going to penetrate it and actually do it - it is tough. You doubt yourself and self doubt is the worst thing a fighter can have so it is possible. It is not like it is out of the question but it is not going to be easy to come back mentally and psychologically," Ward told BoxingScene.com. |
