Now that the highly publicized Mayweather vs McGregor bout is in every spectator's rear view, boxing heads can look forward to competitive match-ups and "real" fights, like this weekend's HBO tripleheader from the StubHub Center in Carson, California, and next Saturday's PPV showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin.
Despite taking numerous stabs at May/Mac over the last several weeks, current boxing promoter and former 6 division world champion Oscar De la Hoya sounded somewhat appreciative of the attention that the massive undertaking attracted to the fringe American pastime of boxing.
When asked if he noticed whether or not there was a recent surge of interest from mainstream and casual sports fans since the financial and critical hit that was Mayweather/McGregor, the Golden Boy was surprisingly frank.
"There is...4 million homes bought Mayweather/McGregor," Oscar De La Hoya recently stated on "The Breakfast Club" radio show. "So that's obviously an opportunity, but how do you keep them interested? What I don't like is that Mayweather/McGregor can attract those people for one night. But how do you keep those people interested over and over again?"
"It's by ** these types of fights...by ** Canelo vs GGG."
Indeed. But while two very outspoken sports figures like McGregor and Mayweather can successfully sell a hyped mismatch and draw over an estimated 4 million pay-per-view purchases, how do two boxers who haven't quite mastered the English language capture the imagination of those same spectators?
Admittedly, Oscar recognizes the seemingly daunting task ahead of him.
"Yeah...it makes it a little bit more difficult for me," states the owner and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. "But because both of these guys have been destroying everyone in the ring and no really knows how this thing is going to turn out, the match-up [Canelo vs GGG] sells itself. This is a fight that is great for the sport of boxing."
Between the two Middleweight combatants, Canelo and Golovkin boast an impressive 67 knock-out victories from a combined 88 total bouts. And because the projected style match-up appears to be a classic "matador versus bull" pairing, most ringside observers are expecting plenty of fireworks and excitement throughout the scheduled twelve round affair.
Although nothing in the squared circle is guaranteed, De la Hoya is willing to put his money where his mouth is...literally and figuratively.
"I'm telling you, if Canelo vs GGG doesn't deliver, I'll refund everybody's money. That's how confident I am...it's going to be a great fight. If it turns out like I think it's going to turn out, eight rounds of hell, I think even more fans are going to be interested in the sport."
In the US, the Canelo vs GGG PPV price is $69.99 to $79.99 depending on how and where it'll be viewed.
Will Canelo vs. GGG attract more than 1.5 million PPV buys on Saturday, September 16? And will Alvarez vs. Golovkin live up to it's "all-action" billing? Fight fans should be treated to a great one next weekend. |
