Golden Boy Promotions has received word that Miguel Cotto is safe and sound in Puerto Rico, which has been ravaged by the effects recent hurricanes. The events have left millions without basic necessities. Just recently they got in touch with their client.
"The good news is that he's safe, we heard from him. He and his family are fine,"explained Eric Gomez, the president of Golden Boy, to BoxingScene.com.
"He is going to fight in December and he's coming out next week to start his camp with Freddie Roach."
On August 26th Cotto captured the vacant WBO 154-pound title by defeating Yoshihiro Kamegai at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
''What we're working on now is finalizing the opponent. There's a short list of guys and hopefully by the end of this week we'll get that locked down," said Gomez, who added.
"We're looking at December 2nd and we have the MSG (Madison Square Garden) locked in."
The upcoming schedule has a plethora of shows in New York but Gomez isn't concerned that this could adversely affect their card.
"No, not at all,'' he told BoxingScene.com," Cotto's an iconic figure, MSG's committed to him 100-percent. They're going to put a full marketing plan behind him like they've always done anytime he's fought there. He's the king of New York and always been great in New York. So we're not concerned whatsoever."
Cotto - who turns 37 - in late October has continually said this will be his last year in the sport, having turned professional in 2001.
"It's really up to him, he's the boss. If he says it's his last fight, we're going to support him. We're going to do our job to make it memorable,'' said Gomez."If he decides to keep fighting then more power to him and we're going to help him. Whatever he wants to do, we're going to support him."
