Canelo: It's Up To Golovkin, My Priority is The May Rematch!

Less than a month after his Las Vegas showdown ended with a draw, Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez prioritized a tie-breaker with Gennady Golovkin for the month of May.
Canelo (49-1-2, 34 KOs) fought Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) to a twelve round split draw on September 16th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The controversial scores came at 118-110 for Canelo, 115-113 for Canelo, and 114-114 for the draw. As a result, Golovkin retained his IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight world titles.

There is an immediate rematch clause in the contract, which Canelo can exercise - but the two sides are currently negotiating the terms for Cinco De Mayo weekend, on May 5th, and likely once again in Las Vegas.
"For me the priority is [the rematch]. Right now I'm going to rest, but the priority is the tiebreaker in May. We will try to make the fight, do the best we can do to make it in May," said Canelo in the Zapotean ball park to ESPN Deportes.
"It's up to them [if they want to make a deal for the rematch], I'm in for the tiebreaker. We have to negotiate, we're ready, it's my priority for May."
Although Arlington, Texas and Las Vegas, Nevada have been viewed as the top locations for the rematch, it's being said that nothing has been decided yet on the target venue - and only thing being insisted on is the rematch will be held in May.
Golden Boy executives began the negotiations a few days ago for the rematch between the Mexican idol and the Kazakh multi-champion, so it is expected that probably by the end of this year there will be some concrete news about the second fight.
In addition, the World Boxing Council has given the green light to the tiebreaker between GGG and Canelo - which gives Golovkin additional time to make his mandatory defense against top challenger Jermall Charlo. |
