Demetrius Andrade faces Alantez Fox this Saturday from the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, New York. Andrade, who held various portions of world titles at junior middleweight, is now expected to settle in as a middleweight as he signed a multi-fight deal with HBO.
So if he had his way, who would Andrade like to face next? He replied without hesitation - "Triple G.''
"Because he's at the top of the food chain, I believe he beat Canelo (Saul Alvarez) and for me to be who I want to be, it would have to be against somebody like him,'' Andrade told BoxingScene.com in a recent interview.
"It seems like he's given everybody else opportunities. He gave David Lemieux an opportunity, he gave 'Canelo' an opportunity, I know he was looking for (Billy Joe) Saunders but Saunders is fighting David Lemieux.
"So if he doesn't have any fights lined up, I mean, it's only perfect that the next fight in the second quarter of the year would be against somebody like me."
It's an interesting answer given by Andrade, given that it's Alvarez who represents the bigger payday. To which he reasoned - "Yeah, of course there's probably going to be more money in facing Canelo but there's going to be more money after I beat Triple G to fight Canelo though."
The 29-year old Andrade (24-0, 16 KO's), who's momentum has stalled in recent years, last fought on March 11th in Germany where he narrowly defeated Jack Culcay for the WBA 154-pound title.
Canelo challenged Golovkin for the IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight titles last month, and they fought to a twelve round split draw at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. At the moment the two sides are discussing the possibility of a rematch, which may take place in May of next year as part of Cinco De Mayo weekend.
