Abel Sanchez, trainer for IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs), wants a proper investigation and a proper decision with respect to the drug test controversy concerning Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs).
Last week it was revealed that Canelo had tested positive for trace levels of clenbuterol - in connection to the drug testing protocol for the rematch with Golovkin.
The rematch is scheduled for May 5th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Canelo and his team are confident that the clenbuterol traces are a direct result of food contamination. There is an ongoing problem in Mexico with meat being contaminated with clenbuterol.
Because of the problems they are facing, Canelo quickly shifted his training camp from Mexico to the United States.
Before the two fighters are allowed to face each other in the ring, Sanchez wants Canelo to be officially cleared of any wrongdoing or suspended with a heavy fine.
"It would be ignorant for me to speculate," Sanchez told Sky Sports. "I think the experts have to go through all the process of investigating, but I do think there needs to be an investigation.
"I don't think it should be just swept under the rug. That's not good for our sport. That's not good for the future of our sport. I think that he needs to either be cleared, or be suspended and fined immensely, but if he's not, then I think we present future problems for us in this game."
Sanchez indicates that Golovkin is upset with the recent turn of events, but plans to continue training hard in Big Bear until he's told not to.
"He was a little upset also he was a little disappointed that his team wasn't more diligent about the food. But he knows that this is part of this game, and he just continues to train, and hopefully everything is alright, and we'll keep training until it's not," Sanchez said.
