Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. is siding with his countryman, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-2 34 KOs), to win the upcoming rematch with IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs).
The two boxers fought to a controversial twelve round draw last September at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The rematch is scheduled for May 5th, also at the T-Mobile, and back on HBO Pay-Per-View.
Last May, Chavez Sr. and Canelo were at odds.
Canelo dominated the son of a legend, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., over twelve rounds of action at a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds. Chavez Jr. has yet to return since that contest.
Chavez Sr. believes the skills and the youth of Canelo will lead him to victory. He says the boxer will only need to do one thing - throw more combinations to get the job done.
The first time around, the judges saw it 118-110 for Canelo, 115-113 for Golovkin and 114-114 for the draw.
"I think Canelo has more of an advantage, because of his youth, because of his strength. He just has to adjust, win the rounds with more quality, with more combinations when throwing his shots, but I think he has everything to win," Chavez Sr. said.
The rematch has had it's share of controversy in the last few weeks.
It was recently revealed that Canelo had tested positive for clenbuterol in two of his random drug tests taken in February. Since then, he's been tested three times in the month of March and came up negative.
Canelo and his team have been firm that his positive tests were due to food contamination.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission is investigating Canelo's test, but there has been no word on their ruling. The rematch is not said to be in any jeopardy, and nobody expects the contest to be delayed from the scheduled date.
