Joe Gallagher Calls For More Unannounced Drug Tests All Year

After the recent news that Canelo Alvarez tested positive for banned drug clenbuterol, trainer Joe Gallagher has argued why boxing needs to introduce stricter testing.

Gallagher was speaking about Liam Smith's World Title challenge against Sadam Ali on May 12th, where 'Beefy' can win back the belt he lost to Canelo in September 2016.

With Smith having to travel to New York to face Ali, his trainer revealed that controversial judging is not his main concern, but pre-fight drug testing is.

"I'm not suggesting in any way that he [Ali] is using performance-enhancing drugs at all, but I've been advised to make sure that he does do the tests for the anti-doping. That's not to say that he's been on it before, but that's the only thing that worries me sometimes when you're going over there to America," Gallagher told the BoxNation Podcast.

"He was a Welterweight, he's come up to Light-Middleweight, [then] beat Miguel Cotto. There's just little alarm bells like that go on in your head. My main concern is just to make sure the tests are done and to make sure he doesn't eat any Mexican meat," he joked, referencing Team Canelo's reasoning for the failed test.

"I hope they're as stringent as they are here. I think there should be more unannounced tests, like there is at the moment, all the time. And I think they should go from 90 days out instead of 45 days. That's my take on it."

Gallagher says that Smith is willing to fight anywhere in the world, and was happy to travel to have the chance to become a two-time World Champion. He also admits that his charge will have to be on top of his game to beat Ali.

"I've been told he's got quite fast hands on the inside, a heavy-hitter, he can punch. That showed the night when he beat Miguel Cotto. It's no easy task, he's a good World Champion and he can do a bit of everything so it's a tough fight for Liam Smith," he added.
