The World Boxing Council will be paying very close attention to Wednesday's hearing in Las Vegas, where Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will learn his fate when he takes part in a disciplinary hearing with the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Lat month, Canelo was temporarily suspended by the NSAC for coming up positive for the banned substance clenbuterol in two voluntary doping tests that were taken back in February.
Given this situation, Canelo made a decision to withdrew from a scheduled rematch with middleweight king Gennady Golovkin - which was set to take place on May 5 in Las Vegas.
World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman expects that all the facts will be analyzed together and not in isolation, and take into consideration that Canelo, in previous tests, had always been negative within the Clean Boxing program that the WBC undertook with VADA a couple of years ago.
Canelo is facing a one year suspension, but it may get reduced to six months.
"We do not know how Nevada will proceeds. He is getting a trial, he has already been found guilty, we hope that all the facts will be analyzed and that the final result will be favorable as possible for Canelo," said Sulaiman.
He confirmed that the WBC will have a representative at Canelo's hearing, and he will report the final decision made by NSAC.
"At the public hearing with Canelo, we will be present as listeners to see the entire process, we provided valuable information that can help analyze the case in its entirety, specifically the clenbuterol," Sulaiman said.
The WBC leader hopes that the decision of the NSAC does not affect a potential tiebreaker between Canelo and Golovkin, because nothing would please him more to see that rematch take place in September.
"I hope so, that in September they will face each other again, but we have to wait for the decision to be made by Nevada, which will decide many things for the future of both fighters [with their ruling]," Sulaiman said.
