The controversy continues as it relates to the potential rematch between IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs) and Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs).
The two sides were in serious negotiations for a potential rematch on September 15th.
Now the rematch is having serious issues, because the boxers are far apart on the monetary split.
According to Tom Loeffler, who runs GGG Promotions, Canelo is standing firm on a 65-35 split - while Golovkin wants something more fair - an even 50-50 split.
Last September, Canelo and Golovkin fought to a controversial twelve round split draw at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
They were then scheduled to fight in a rematch on May 5th, back at T-Mobile.
Canelo withdrew from the Cinco De Mayo date after testing positive for the banned substance clenbuterol. He was hit with a six month suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
While Canelo has maintained that his positive tests were a direct result of ingesting contaminated meat, Golovkin has trashed him numerous times in the press.
Golovkin believes Canelo is a long-time user of performance enhancing drugs, and he even made allegations that Canelo had used PEDs in their first encounter.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya, who handles Canelo, has already made it clear in numerous interviews that Golovkin's new position has forced them to turn away from the rematch and actively pursue other options.
However, Loeffler strongly feels that Canelo needs this rematch in order to repair any damage from the drug testing scandal.
“I really think Canelo needs the rematch with Triple G to save his image, and there was a lot of controversy with the failed drug tests and speculation Canelo took something in the first fight,” Loeffler said to the Las Vegas Review Journal.
“Now that Canelo enrolled in full-time VADA testing, he needs to prove he can fight the same way.”
