Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) is already working hard as he prepares for the upcoming rematch with WBC/WBA/IBO middleweight world champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs).
The second fight will take place on September 15th, as part of Mexican Independence Day weekend at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The contest will be distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT.
They first met in September 2017, with Canelo and GGG fight to a controversial twelve round split draw, also at the T-Mobile.
Canelo, 27-years-old, has been out of the ring since going to a draw with Golovkin.
And Golovkin, 36-years-old, last fought back in May 2017, when he scored a two round knockout victory over Vanes Martirosyan at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. It was Golovkin's first knockout after fighting to back to back twelve round decisions with Canelo and Daniel Jacobs in 2017.
Vanes was a late replacement for Canelo, who withdrew from the contest after testing positive for the banned substance clenbuterol.
Canelo has claimed that his positive tests were a direct result of ingesting contaminated meat while training in Mexico.
Golovkin accused Canelo of being a user of performance enhancing drugs.
For this contest, both fighters are being tested under a strict protocol being administered by VADA.
Golovkin has continued to rip Canelo in the media - and the only way to stop his chatter is to knock him out, according to Canelo's head promoter Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions.
“There is serious bad blood between these fighters. The fight is personal, and the stakes are high. Canelo will without a doubt want to shut Golovkin up, and the only way to do it is by knocking him out on September 15. I have no doubts that our champion will walk away with the victory," De La Hoya said.
