There is plenty of chatter about the future plans of WBC lightweight titlist Mikey Garcia, who faces IBF belt-holder, Robert Easter, in what is an anticipated unification bout at the Staples Center in Los Angeles this weekend. Garcia himself has spoken of moving up to welterweight to challenge IBF champion Errol Spence.
But Richard Schaefer, the head of Ringstar Sports, said to BoxingScene.com - "I think what we really need to do on Saturday night, we need to see how does the fight evolve. Robert Easter is a tall guy, he's a big 135-pounder, he could easily be a 140-pounder. So I think that fight will tell us a lot and I think we really have that conversation at the post-fight press conference and I think both of us can talk much more intelligently about it.
"But I tell you, just like I would never bet against Mikey Garcia, just like I would never have bet and never would bet against Floyd Mayweather - that is how good Mikey Garcia is."
Garcia's last two bouts against Adrien Broner and Sergey Lipinets came at junior welterweight. It would be interesting to see how his body would handle the fluctuations in weight.
Schaefer says - ''he's a smart guy, he's not like a reckless guy and so for him he knows his body best. To say that if the right fight presents itself to go to 147 tells you that he feels comfortable, that he can be dominant at 147, as well."
But Schaefer added - "Now, going to pick the best 147-pounder there is, Errol Spence, and one of the best pound-for-pound fighters to top it off, is I think a very, very risky proposition. But again, who am I to second guess him? But there are other fights which can be made.
"As a promoter, for example, I would love to see a fight between him and Manny Pacquiao That would be a hell of a fight as well."
