On September 15th, during Mexican Independence Day weekend, the world will finally get the rematch between Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.
Their first fight, which took place last September ended in a controversial split draw. Like the first fight, the rematch will take place in Las Vegas and will be distributed by HBO pay-per-view.
The rematch was supposed to take place in May but was postponed after Alvarez (49-1-2) failed a test for Clenbuterol. Golovkin instead fought last second fill in Vanes Martirosyan and obliterated him in 2 rounds.
Golovkin (38-0-1) is now 36 years old and Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach thinks that age may finally be catching up to him. Canelo just turned 28-years-old and is in the prime of his career.
"Triple G is a good friend of mine but in this particular fight I think I am going to favor the younger guy in this one. I think that Triple G's movements - he doesn't cut the ring off the way that he used to - and he may be slowing down a little bit. But it is a very interesting fight and I can't wait to see it," Roach told BoxingScene.com when asked for his opinion on the fight.
The scores for the first fight were 114-114 for the draw, 115-113 for Golovkin and a head scratching 118-110 for Canelo.
Like many insiders, Roach felt the fight was very close and a case can be made for either guy to win.
"I had it even. It could have went either way. The rematch is a big fight. Two great fighters. I can't wait to see. It is one that I am looking forward to. I think it is going to be a great fight," said Roach.
