Mosley: In Their Prime, De La Hoya Better Than Mayweather

Hall of Famer 'Sugar' Shane Mosley has faced a who's who of fighters in the span of his career.

Two fighters that he faced in particular were Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Mosley got two wins over De La Hoya and he was thoroughly outboxed by Mayweather when they met in 2010 - although Mosley rocked Mayweather pretty badly in the second round.

In his option, Mosley believes De La Hoya - in his prime - was a better fighter than Mayweather.

Mayweather won a close twelve round split decision over De La Hoya in 2007. Mayweather was in the prime of his career and De La Hoya retired from the boxing one year later.

“In his prime, definitely I would say Oscar was better,” Mosley said to Yahoo Sports. “He was more physical and faster, and he had more punching power.”

Early in his career, Mosley had discussed the idea of fighting Mayweather - and this was at a time when Mosley was fighting at lightweight and Mayweather was at super featherweight.

By the time they actually fought in 2010, Mosley was 38-years-old and they were both competing as welterweights.

Mosley feels that he could have beaten Mayweather - had they fought when the two of them were competing in the lower weight divisions.

“I thought I was too strong for Mayweather and too fast,” Mosley said. “I had too many different weapons that he couldn’t get out of the way of. He couldn’t get out of the way of a lot of those shots because I would have been throwing a lot more shots [than I did when we fought]. I would have been constantly pressuring him and being on him," Mosley said.

“Look, Mayweather is a great fighter and you can’t take that from him. In his era, he did really good. I believe I would have been able to beat him had it been a different time, but I don’t take anything away from him. He was undefeated and he beat everyone he needed to beat. He was the king of his era.”
