WBO Welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao won't be retiring anytime soon or at least after one year before his six-year term as Philippine senator ends in 2022.
Pacquiao's longtime trainer Freddie Roach spoke to Boxing News saying the fighting senator will give up boxing when he seeks a higher office.
“I would say maybe at some point soon [Pacquiao will retire]. He’s still really looked good in his last fights, he’s Manny Pacquiao, he’s got a mean streak in him. I don’t think that’s gone away,” Roach told Boxing News. “When he runs for president then he’ll give up! he added.
It is no secret Pacquiao is looking at the 2022 presidential elections when he may either run for vice-president or president of the Philippines.
Two years ago, Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum was quoted to have said that Pacquiao would seek a senate post and if he wins he will run for president.
“He’s gonna be a president. He’s gonna run for Senate in the Philippines in 2016 … and then in 2022 or maybe later, he’ll run for president of the Philippines,” Arum said.
Pacquiao, a two-time congressman representing the lone district of Sarangani Province in Southern Philippines, has won a six year-term as a neophyte senator in the last national elections. His term expires in 2022.
Pacquiao has to stay popular in preparation for his vice-presidential or presidential bid in 2022 and one of the best way to remain popular among the voters is for him to keep on fighting and winning.
The 38-year-old neophyte senator is set to face unbeaten Australian challenger Jeff Horn on July 2 at the Suncorp Arena in Brisbane, Australia. |
