Robert Garcia, brother and head trainer of three division world champion Mikey Garcia, does not believe Vasyl Lomachenko will agree to a fight.
According to Robert, Lomachenko's next fight tells the story - on whether or not the two-time Olympic gold medal winner would come up to the lightweight limit of 135-pounds to face Mikey for his WBC world title.
Lomachenko (8-1, 6 KOs) is scheduled to defend his WBO super featherweight title against Colombia’s Miguel Marriaga (25-2, 21 KOs) on Saturday night at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles (ESPN).
Marriaga is a featherweight contender who is coming up in weight, and he's coming off a twelve round decision loss to WBO 126-pound champion Oscar Valdez, who has far less experience than Lomachenko.
On Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Mikey made a big statement when he moved up in weight to dominate four division champion Adrien Broner (33-3, 24 KOs, 1 NC) over twelve rounds.
Lomachenko is promoted by Top Rank, who handled Garcia for nearly ten years. Garcia fought a legal battle that lasted over two years to break away from Top Rank and secure his release in May 2016.
Robert feels that regardless of whatever Top Rank and Lomachenko say about the fight, he doesn't expect it to happen any time soon.
"His manager [Egis Klimas] always calls me and tells me that we should start promoting that fight, but they're definitely not going to do it. They're fighting a featherweight who just got beat. That tells you the answer. Of course he says [he wants the fight], but every fighter says they want it. Lomachenko might say that he wants to fight Triple G, because that's what he'll say. He does have skills. I do consider him my favorite active fighter right now, because I like the way he fights - but he's just too small for Mikey," Robert told BoxingScene.com.
