Sanchez Denies Reports That Golovkin is Mulling Retirement

Abel Sanchez, trainer for IBF, IBO, WBC, WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, has denied reports that his boxer is considering the possibility of retirement in the aftermath of his upcoming showdown with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
Golovkin vs. Canelo takes place on September 16th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
"What he said is that his wife asked him to stay home for longer periods of time, and since he does not speak fluent English - someone misunderstood him," Sánchez explained to ESPN Deportes. "What woman would not want to see her husband spend more time at home?"

However, Sanchez confirmed that on the night of the fight - Golovkin will be defending all four of his titles. Canelo had stated that he plans to pay sanctioning fees to the WBA, IBF.
"We are going to defend four belts that night: that of the WBC, the WBA, the IBF and the IBO," confirmed the Mexican trainer.
"All the titles that Golovkin owns will be in play, and what 'Canelo' decides about that I do not know, it's up to him. We have already had four weeks in the camp and everything is going very well. We are just waiting for the date of the fight to come."
There are some experts who believe that the Canelo-Golovkin winner will become the best pound-for-pound boxer in the sport. Currently most people consider WBA, IBF, WBO light heavyweight champion Andre Ward as the top pound-for-pound guy.
"The best pound-for-pound issue is something that you journalists can vote for, for those that you consider to be the best. It's something we all can criticize, or question, and disagree with. We, as coaches and managers, we can think differently. But that's not our place, it's a matter for the journalists, the fans and we can not do anything about it," Sanchez said. |
