White: Smaller Gloves Definitely Benefit McGregor, Not Floyd
UFC President Dana White is hoping the Nevada State Athletic Commission approves an application to use 8-ounce gloves in the upcoming showdown between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and UFC superstar Conor McGregor.
The contest is contracted for the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds, and under the NSAC rules - any boxing match above the welterweight limit of 147-pounds must require the use of 10-ounce gloves.
They are set to collide on August 26th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

McGregor, who has zero experience in pro boxing, is accustomed to fighting in 4-ounce gloves in the UFC.
Both fighters are on board with changing the glove size to 8-ounce. The NSAC is going to make a ruling on their request on Wednesday.
White believes the smaller gloves will give his fighter a big boost.
"It definitely benefits Conor," White explained to Sky Sports. "First of all, Floyd isn't a big puncher, he's not a knockout puncher. His whole game is defence, using the gloves to defend himself and smaller gloves means Conor will have more places to hit.
"We've always wanted to have smaller gloves, they didn't want it and now all of a sudden Floyd has decided that he wants smaller gloves. So now we have a hearing with the state commission this week and hopefully that will happen. Conor isn't concerned about Floyd's punching power at all."
Smaller gloves or not, McGregor is a massive underdog in the fight. Most experts are predicting a one-sided domination by Mayweather.
White is shocked that McGregor is being wideley written off by the majority of most observers in boxing and mixed martial arts.
"I stopped doubting Conor McGregor a long time ago," White said. "Everything he's told me he's going to do, he's done, so if he says he'll beat Floyd Mayweather inside four rounds, he will.
"I don't think Conor underestimates him, he obviously respects him but you've got to remember - Floyd is 41 years old and Conor McGregor is 28 years old. He's the bigger, stronger fighter. People aren't giving him a chance and that's just crazy. This is going to be a fight, and anything can happen in a fight." |
