A few days ago, Mikey Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs) took to social media and called for a fight with Miguel Cotto (41-5, 33 KOs). Mikey's trainer and older brother, Robert Garcia, says his younger brother is up for the bout.
So is there any legs to the possibility of Garcia facing Cotto in the upcoming months?
"We're not taking it serious, at all," said Eric Gomez, the president of Golden Boy Promotions, to BoxingScene.com. "I think it came from Mikey. Mikey is the one who called out Cotto. He tweeted something or whatever but look, Miguel wants to fight the winner of 'Canelo' (Saul Alvarez)-'(Gennady) Golovkin and after that fight we're going to sit down with Miguel and we're going to look at all the options."
One issue regarding this Garcia vs. Cotto fight is just what weight class would this potential match-up take place at. Garcia, who holds the WBC lightweight belt, soundly defeated Adrien Broner on July 29th at junior welterweight. While Cotto just recently captured the WBO junior middleweight title on August 26th by out-pointing Yoshihiro Kamegai.
Cotto and his trainer, Freddie Roach, have stated interest in facing the winner of Alvarez-Golovkin (which takes place on September 16th) but the Puerto Rican star has made it clear that 2017 will be his last in boxing.
"If Golovkin is successful and wins, Golovkin already mentioned that he wouldn't mind fighting Cotto in December and if 'Canelo' wins then he most likely wont fight against till May of next year and we'll have to sit down with Miguel and go over our game plan," said Gomez, who's company now represents Cotto.
"But there's a few guys out there," he continued. "There's (David) Lemieux, he's mentioned the he'd fight Lemieux, which would be a great fight in December. So there's a few options there for Miguel and we're going to see what happens with 'Canelo'-Golovkin."
