Probably the biggest boxing fight available excluding Mayweather fights, Canelo Alvarez is finally set to take on Gennady Golovkin and much awaited middleweight showdown on Saturday, 16th September 2017 in Las Vegas. This will be the biggest fight of the year even eclipsing Joshua vs Klitscko and there is a lot of money at stake. Both fighters are set to earn their biggest purse with Canelo Alvarez guaranteed $15 million and could clear upto $25 million depending on PPV numbers. Golovkin on the other hand will also get his biggest career payday and should clear anywhere between $10 to $15 million. We take a look at all the financial aspects heading to the big fight.
Canelo vs Golovkin Purse: Canelo Alvarez is widely regarded as the biggest name in boxing after Mayweather and Pacquiao and his PPV numbers has been impressive even with some underwhelming fights in recent years. Gennady Golovkin on the other hand is a total different beast who is slowly but surely taking US under his charm with devastating exhibition of power over the last few fights on US soil. How much they can clear is remain to be seen and depending heavily on PPV buys and gate receipts. But we can easily say both fighters are ** guaranteed atleast $15 million plus their respective share of PPV revenue and their personal sponsorship deals. Now lets take a look at potential PPV numbers.
Canelo Alvarez is a bonafide PPV star both in native Mexico and the US and his last major fight was against Miguel Cotto back in 2015 where Canelo-Cotto did just over 900,000 ppv buys bringing in $58 million revenue from US TV. Golden boy and HBO are hoping to at least double those numbers with Canelo-Golovkin and if the expectations are meet this fight will bring in easily over $100 million in PPV revenue just from the US plus international broadcasting deals.
T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas is set to host the fight and 20,000 capacity arena should bring in $20 to $25 million in gate receipts. So with US PPV, international broadcasting deals, closed circuit TV and gate receipts fight should bring in around $150 million in total revenue.
So how much Canelo and Golovkin can clear from this fight ? Asuming fight do around 1.5 million ppv buys that will bring in around $100 million. Fighters get around 60% of the PPV revenue so thats $60 million to be shared between the two fighters. Canelo Alvarez is “A” side with 60/40 split. So thats pretty much secure both fighters their biggest career purse with Canelo clearing over $35 million while Golovkin taking home around $24 million from this fight.
