Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) has made it clear that he wants a rematch with IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) in 2018 - and he wants that fight before anything else.
The two boxers collided on September 16th in a high profile fight from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
After twelve rounds of action that lived up to the hype, a controversial twelve round split draw was handed down. The scores saw 118-110 for Canelo, 115-113 for Golovkin and 114-114 for the draw.
Canelo is not looking to fight again until May of 2018, during Cinco De Mayo weekend. If rematch discussions heat up, Golovkin is willing to wait until May - or else he wants to make a voluntary defense on a date in December.
At the moment, the only fight on Canelo's mind, and the only fight he wants, is a tiebreaker with Golovkin.
"I want it to be my first fight of 2018. I do not want another fight that is not the tiebreaker with Golovkin, and that's what we're going to try to do," said Canelo in a statement provided to BoxingScene.com. Canelo was speaking at a press conference in Colombia, where the Mexican star was present for the announcement of the annual convention of the World Boxing Association (WBA).
While there are many who believe Golovkin had done enough to earn a decision win, Canelo believes the outcome should have been his.
"I feel that I was the winner, but that's boxing. I told everyone that it would be a great fight, I feel very happy with what I did, the people were happy and now they want to see the rematch," Canelo said.
Canelo's promoter, Golden Boy Promotions President Eric Gomez, has already begun discussions with Golovkin's team, which is headed by Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions. Both sides are hoping to reach a deal before the year is out.
