If you want to grab tickets for the December 9th showdown between WBO super featherweight titlist, Vasyl Lomachenko, and Guillermo Rigondeaux, you better do so quickly.
Tickets are becoming very scarce for this event, which pits two amateur legends who both are two time Olympic champions, at the Theater of Madison Square Garden in New York City. The anticipated fight takes place on December 9.
"Less than a hundred tickets (remain)," said Bob Arum, who's company Top Rank is promoting this card that will be televised on ESPN. "It's going to be the biggest gate for boxing in the history of the Theater of Madison Square Garden."
When asked if the interest in this event surprised him at all, the veteran promoter told BoxingScene.com on Tuesday morning:
"No, because people respect history, people respect the fact that this is a historic kind of fight. It's never happened before: two, two-time gold medalists fighting each other is something that is extremely unique and so people want - and they can it at home and watch it for free, go to a bar and watch it for free - but people want to be there," Arum said to BoxingScene.
Thus far in 2017 Lomachenko (9-1, 7 KO's) has stopped Jason Sosa in nine rounds on April 8th and then halted Miguel Marriaga in seven on August 5th. Rigondeaux (17-0, 11 KO's) in his last bout was involved in a first round no-contest after hitting mandatory challenger Moises Flores after the bell back on June 17th. The fight was initially ruled as a first round knockout, but then later overturned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after reviewing video footage of the fight.
Rigondeaux is the WBA's super bantamweight champion and is moving up by two weight divisions to face Lomachenko for his WBO super featherweight world title.
