Godlen Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is very confident that a rematch between Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) and middleweight king Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) will take place next May - during Cinco De Mayo weekend.
This past September, during Mexican Independence Day weekend, Canelo challenged Golovkin for the IBO, IBF, WBA, WBC middleweight titles at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The HBO Pay-Per-View main event ended in a controversial twelve round split draw. A score of 118-110 in favor of Canelo created a lot of controversy and widespread criticism - even from Canelo;s own team members who felt the contest was close.
Soon after, the two sides began discussing the possibility of a rematch in the new year.
De La Hoya, who promotes Canelo, says the rematch is likely going to take place in the same Las Vegas venue
The deal is still very much not finalized, but De La Hoya believes the contest is sure thing to take place on Cinco De Mayo weekend. He feels the second fight will be a lot bigger than the first contest - which generated over a million purchases on pay-per-view, although the final figure has never been revealed.
"We're working on that for Cinco De Mayo of next year... in Las Vegas, at the same place T-Mobile. But that fight is definitely gonna happen. That's the big fight... it's gonna be huge. If people didn't see the first one, wait until the second one - it's gonna be huge," De La Hoya told TMZ.
The only loose piece of the puzzle is next month's fight between WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders and challenger David Lemieux.
Lemieux is also promoted by Golden Boy. Should he win the WBO - which is the only belt not possessed by Golovkin - he could become a very strong secondary option for his promotional stablemate, Canelo. Lemieux could also become a bargaining chip for Golden Boy to get a Golovkin deal finalized.
