Chepo Reynoso, co-trainer and manager of Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs), is confident that his boxer will come through with a promise to score a knockout victory in the upcoming rematch with IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs).
The rematch was officially announced last week, and takes place on the Cinco De Mayo date of May 5th at a location that has yet to be announced.
In the first bout, which took place on September 16th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, saw the two boxers trade punches on pace to a controversial twelve round split draw.
Both fighters were upset with the verdict of the first fight and each boxer felt the outcome should have been in their favor.
"Both were dissatisfied, felt they had won and that's why everything was faster, they facilitated the process to get the rematch done," says Chepo to Juan Manuel Vazquez.
"That occasion allowed the two of them to get to know each other, feel out each other's punches and styles. I think the one who got the most from that experience was Canelo, because he showed that he can take Golovkin punches and proved that he is not invincible."
When the rematch was announced, Canelo made a promise that Golovkin won't complain about the scoring in the second contest - because he will get knocked out and never get the opportunity to see the judges.
Chepo is very confident that his boxer will make good on that promise.
"It will be the culmination of a trajectory that we started from when Canelo was a kid, knocking out the knockout artist, and it will be the highest moment in that story we are writing. I use the plural 'we' because I am part of that history, I helped formed him from the beginning and at least when he got the name, Canelo, which I put on him," Chepo said.
