Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. is shaking his head at the recent decision by the Nevada State Athletic Commission - which issued an order last Friday to temporarily suspend Canelo Alvarez until a hearing date of April 10.
Canelo is still scheduled to to face IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC Gennady Golovkin on May 5th, from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The NSAC decided to issue a temporary suspension on Canelo in connection with two separate drug tests that came up positive for the banned substance clenbuterol in the month of February.
At the upcoming hearing, the NSAC will make a final decision regarding Canelo and his ability to move forward with the Golovkin rematch. He fought Golovkin to a controversial split draw last September at the same Las Vegas venue.
In the opinion of Chavez Sr., it's ridiculous to make both fighters wait until April 10 - when a final decision can be made right now.
He feels it's unfair to both boxers, because neither is 100% sure if the rematch will move forward.
"With all due respect, to me it's ridiculous. If a verdict had already been given, why wait until April 10th if we are 25 days away from the fight. What is the purpose of doing that?," Chavez Sr. question on ESPN Deportes.
"I do not think they will cancel it . This is more of a parameter to measure what is going to happen, but there is a lot at stake, a lot of money is at stake and Las Vegas is not going to let the fight slip away to Texas or New York. There are millions of dollars at play.
"The fighters in one way or another... this simply distracts them, affects their concentration, they do not train the same, they do not prepare the same. I think the decision should have been made right now, so everyone would not be waiting with anticipation on whether there will be a fight or there will not be a fight."
