Numerous rumours are circulating in the Russian press which indicate that the World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight final is going to ** some change in terms of the date and venue.
Initially, the final WBSS clash between the two undefeated 200lb champions, WBC/WBO Olexander Usyk (14-0, 11 KOs) and Super WBA/IBF Murat Gassiev (26-0, 19 KOs), was scheduled to take place in Jeddah, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on May 11th. The winner will gain all four of the major sanctioning titles.
The source of the buzz is being pointed at the Twitter account of Kalle and Nisse Sauerland, whose promotional company “The Sauerland Event” is one of the prime forces behind the World Boxing Super Series.
The account more or less indicated that Usyk-Gassiev would make a shift.
“UPDATE: We are currently finalising the dates and venues for our summer #AliTrophy finals #UsykGassiev #GrovesSmith - these are massive finals and we want to get this just right! #WBSS”, stated Kalle & Nisse Sauerland.
Umar Kremlev, the general secretary of the Russian Boxing Federation, was quoted by TASS saying the following in a recent interview:
“We have put forward our offer. If the Kingdom [of Saudi Arabia] is not ready, we shall acquire the hosting rights. Boxers and other participants can arrive to the KSA under the certain conditions. As of now, those conditions are unclear. To arrange the final in Russia will cost us about 20 to 25 million dollars, including both staging expenses and fees”, commented Kremlev.
After the news of a possible shift was broken out on social media, Kremlev told R-Sport that the offer was put on the table.
“We have offered to stage the fight on July 22 in Russia. We are looking forward to receiving a response from the organizers”.
The World Boxing Super Series official portal hasn’t posted any official information with respect to a possible shift.
