BoxingScene.com and other members of the media caught up with former welterweight champion Shawn "Showtime" Porter (28-2) earlier this week at his Las Vegas media workout for his upcoming showdown against Danny Garcia (34-1).
The vacant WBC welterweight title will be at stake in the Showtime televised main event and the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York will serve as the venue.
One of the topics that was discussed is the September 15th rematch between WBC/WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. The high stakes battle comes almost exactly one year after their first fight ended in a controversial draw.
Canelo-GGG is the most anticipated fight of the year and Porter, like most of the boxing industry, is very intrigued with how the fight will play out. Opinions were divided on who deserved the win in the first fight.
Porter was of the belief that Golovkin had done enough to secure the victory but expects their second go round to play out much differently.
"I fight the week before, man. I love that. I think that this fight - the first was very close - but something is telling me Canelo is going to win this one. I thought Triple G won the first one but some of those rounds were like alright I am giving this round to Triple G and other rounds were where you were like I am giving this to Canelo," said Porter who believes that Alvarez is more equipped to make the necessary adjustments in the rematch.
"I think that Triple G lacks defense and I think that he got hit a lot on the outside and I thing that Canelo is going to be a little bit sharper and faster and a little bit more responsible on defense. I think that he will be ready for the power that Triple G brings and the punches that he brings. Once you have seen the speed and the velocity that somebody is bringing something at you then you can make adjustments so I am expecting Canelo to make the adjustments."
