Light heavyweight contender Marcus Browne was arrested Monday for the third time in less than 10 months for a domestic incident involving the same woman.
The New York Daily News reported Tuesday that Browne was arrested Monday, allegedly for choking his ex-girlfriend September 27. The 30-year-old victim, the mother of Browne’s daughter, alleged Browne choked her during an argument inside her apartment in Staten Island, New York.
Browne, 27, allegedly grabbed her around her neck and damaged the front door of her apartment by kicking it repeatedly. He also reportedly took a phone from the victim’s mother as she attempted to dial 911 and left with it.
Police charged Browne with criminal contempt for violating a restraining order, criminal mischief, criminal obstruction of breathing and harassment. The Daily News reported he was released Monday after posting $2,500 bail.
Just last month, Browne pled guilty to disorderly conduct stemming from two previous arrests involving the same woman. He also was granted a conditional discharge as part of that case and was ordered to complete a domestic violence course.
Browne first was charged with attempted assault and harassment charges stemming from a December 2017 incident at the victim’s apartment. He was arrested again March 30, and was charged with criminal mischief, criminal contempt and harassment following a second incident there.
When those two arrests were reported by the New York Daily News, it cost Browne (22-0, 16 KOs) a shot at Sergey Kovalev, then the WBO light heavyweight champion. Browne had agreed to challenge Kovalev on August 4, but Kathy Duva, Kovalev’s promoter, instead matched Kovalev against Colombia’s Eleider Alvarez because she was unsure of Browne’s availability based on what at that time were pending criminal charges.
Alvarez upset Kovalev by knocking him out in the seventh round August 4 at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
Browne fought that same night, but in a much lower-profile fight. The 2012 American Olympian beat the Dominican Republic’s Lenin Castillo (18-2-1, 13 KOs) by unanimous decision in a 10-rounder at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.
