Abel Sanchez, head trainer for former middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (38-1-1, 34 KOs), says his boxer is not going to return with the goal of hunting down the four world titles that he previously held.
Golovkin, who turns 37-years-old in April, has been out of the ring since September 2018 - when he suffered a twelve round majority decision loss to Canelo Alvarez.
For years, Golovkin's goal was to unify the entire middleweight division.
Golovkin came very close to achieving that goal, when he unified the WBA, IBO, IBF, WBC titles.
After refusing to make a mandatory defense, in order to fight Canelo in a rematch, he was stripped of the IBF strap. And then the remaining three belts were lost in the Canelo rematch.
At the moment Golovkin is a network free agent. Most of the potential fight options are currently aligned with DAZN or Premier Boxing Champions.
One of the biggest options for him, would be the winner of the upcoming clash between Canelo and Daniel Jacobs - who battle for the WBA, WBC, IBF tiles on May 4th. Both fighters are signed to DAZN.
"I think the sport itself and the way the organizations function, it's almost impossible at this stage of his career to go back and search for the four belts. But there are still a lot of great fights that can be made, there are a lot of great fights that the public wants to see. And once he decides who he's going to go with [in terms of the network], that will be announced. It's hard to say who he's going to fight because we don't know what the landscape will be once once he decides," Sanchez told BoxingScene.com.
"He is studying all of his options. Like I've said before, he is on a vacation from boxing right now. He is taking time to relax and spend time with his family. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks he is going to make his decision. It's something where he has to make sure that it's the best decision for him and for his family and for the sport."
