Former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez is very firm on his scoring of the recent Cinco De Mayo encounter.
Two weeks ago, Marquez was working ringside in Las Vegas and watched his countryman Saul "Canelo" Alvarez win a twelve round unanimous decision over Daniel Jacobs to unify the WBC, WBA, IBF middleweight titles at the T-Mobile Arena.
The official judges scored it 115-113, 116-112 and 115-113.
While some of the rounds were close, there was very little controversy over the outcome.
But Marquez felt his countryman did not do enough, and he scored the fight 7 rounds to 5 in favor of Jacobs.
"It was a very close fight, the kind of fight where at the end of each of the rounds it could go to either way," Marquez said. "Jacobs handled the lateral steps well, changing his guard. It's the kind of fight that could have gone either way, but I saw it 115-113 for the American fighter."
Marquez and Canelo have traded words in the past, on more than one occasion. Canelo believes that certain Mexican stars of years past are a bit jealous of his in-ring success and financial rewards.
After Marquez made his statements about the fight, he claims that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes Canelo, reached out took a swipe at him.
De La Hoya told Marquez that he was a bit jealous of Canelo.
And Marquez reacted.
"Now we have to ask Oscar De La Hoya for permission to know what we can say. If we say something, he says that we are envious. As I saw it, Jacobs won with 115-113. De la Hoya sent me a message telling me that I envy them... not on this side," Marquez said.
