Canelo Alvarez’s trainers don’t say much, not even when their fighter is embroiled in boxing’s biggest controversy of the year. Abel Sanchez, Gennady Golovkin’s trainer, is much more outspoken, never shy about expressing his opinion.
Sanchez has been particularly provocative when it comes to discussing Alvarez twice testing positive for clenbuterol. The Mexican superstar’s subsequent suspension caused the cancelation of the Alvarez-Golovkin rematch May 5, but their second middleweight title bout has been rescheduled for September 15 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
When asked about Sanchez on Tuesday during a press conference streamed live on Facebook, Jose Reynoso revealed that he would like Sanchez to take an approach similar that of he and his son as Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) and Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs) prepare for their rematch.
“I think Abel Sanchez likes to talk,” Reynoso said through a translator. “He talks too much. At the end of the day, September 15th it’s gonna be Canelo Alvarez and Triple-G fighting with their fists, not with their mouths. He likes to be the star of the movie and it’s not him. This is about Canelo and Triple-G. And what we need to do as corner men, as trainers, is do our job quietly, because it’s not about us. Abel, learn to be quiet, please.”
The moderator also asked Alvarez if he wanted to say anything directly to Sanchez during the press conference.
“I have nothing to say to him,” Alvarez said through a translator. “He knows what I think of him.”
Sanchez explained that he simply has answered reporters’ questions about Alvarez’s positive tests, six-month suspension and the negative impact this ordeal has had on his fighter’s career.
“I talked about him because of what his actions have been and the consequences that it has caused us as a team here, the GGG team,” Sanchez said. “[Alvarez is] an exceptional fighter. Two guys at the top of their game are gonna duke it out on the 15th. I hope we get the kind of fight that we’re expecting.”
